Abstract
Seaweeds as a source of new compounds found in the sea have been known to have
biosynthesis products larger than other marine plants. Various studies of seaweed have
resulted new compounds with unique structure and have a pharmacological activity.
Therefore the research, excavation and utilization of seaweeds are needed. Activities are
conducted in ONDT are extracting, isolating and identifying the component type of sunscreen
active compounds of Euchema spinosum seaweed along with extracting and testing the
antioxidant activity of Euchema cottonii seaweed and also subsequently formulating cosmetic
preparations made from seaweed extracts. Component type of sunscreen active compounds of
Euchema spinosum seaweed were tested with the color reagent, and the results show that
Euchema spinosum seaweed contains components triterpenoids and tannins compounds that
have sunscreen activity, with test results indicated transmission of erythema 0.929 using UVVis
spectrophotometer at wavelengths from 290 to 372 nm. Test of antioxidant on Eucheuma
cottonii extracts were done using DPPH method of which result showed that the n-hexane,
chloroform and water extracts have antioxidant activity with IC50 values in a row for 543.38
μg / ml, 805.63 μg / ml and 457.29 μg / ml. Antioxidants are compounds that can inhibit
Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) and free radicals. Given the antioxidant activity, underlies
the use of seaweed Euchema cottonii in cosmetic formulations. Further formulation of
sunscreen cream and antioxidant cream.is made from Euchema spinosum seaweed extract as
active agent.
